Coney Island Lunch / Scranton, PA
Texas Wiener: all-beef wiener topped with Düsseldorf mustard, fresh diced onions, famous chili sauce and served on a National Bakery roll.
Steve Karampilas wearing his button down shirt and smoking his House of Windsor cigar never missed one day when he opened the Original Coney-Island Texas Lunch counter from 1923 to 1972. His 2 grandsons now have taken over the helm and 90 years strong Coney Island Lunch is still rocking the dogs. Taken from their web site: “We start with a Berks’ All Beef Wiener by slicing it in half, but not all the way through, and grill the wiener to perfection. Then we serve it on a steamed National Bakery Roll (a local favorite). Adding in our Düsseldorf mustard and fresh diced onions (diced by our 1928 Model Hobart Chopper), the wiener is then topped with our famous homemade Chili Sauce”. Great lunch counter and love the way they split the dogs before they are covered in chili. Side note, the only location they have is on Lackawanna Ave. There is another Coney Island around the corner but its a fake.
